Building your own blue and green lava lamp can be an enjoyable DIY project, here are four steps for success:
1.Gather Materials:
A clear glass container (such as a vase or jar),
Water, vegetable oil, blue and green food coloring as well as Alka-Seltzer tablets or any effervescent tablets and an optional glitter are necessary to complete this step.
2.Fill Your Container:
In a glass jar, pour vegetable oil until approximately three-quarters full and leave some space at the top.
Within another container, mix water with blue and green food coloring until you achieve your desired shades; begin by adding several drops and gradually increase or decrease them as necessary.
Slowly pour colored water into a glass container filled with oil. As it descends to the bottom of the container, it will mix slightly with it and create a separation effect.
3.Add Effervescent Tablets:
One method for adding effervescent tablets is to break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into smaller pieces and place each fragment into oil, watching as it sinks to the bottom.
Once exposed to water, the tablet begins to react with it by creating bubbles which transport colored water up through oil into its core and give off an “lava lamp” effect.
4.Step Back and Enjoy the Show:
Sit back and watch as colored bubbles dance across the oil surface in mesmerizing patterns similar to that found in lava lamps.
For an extended display, more Alka-Seltzer tablets may be added if desired to maintain reaction speed and keep reactions underway.
Experiment with various combinations of food coloring and adjust the number of Alka-Seltzer tablets accordingly to achieve your desired result.
Remember to use caution when handling Alka-Seltzer tablets and avoid inhaling their fumes directly or accidentally ingestion them.
Also ensure your container is stable so it won’t tip easily – and enjoy making your very own blue and green lava lamp!
