This lava-lamp experiment is awesome! This science experiment will be a hit with your kids as they explore colored oil and water.
But there’s a secret ingredient that will make it even more fun!
This is a favorite with kids. Grab a few household items and try this lava-lamp science activity!
Lava Lamp Science Experiment
We are doing a lot of cool science experiments this year as part of our lessons. This lava-lamp experiment is the best!
This experiment requires adult supervision. It is important to supervise your child at all times. You must not let your child put anything in their mouth.
Do not repeat this experiment if they still do.
My kids both had a great time with this. It’s something we have done several times, with different colors. They are always amazed. It’s amazing how long they play with it.
This science experiment can be done with only a few materials, and you probably have them all in your classroom or home.
Lava Lamp Experiment
Supplies needed:
Amazon Associates earns from purchases.
- Vegetable Oil
- Water
- Food coloring – primary colors or neon
- Original Alka Seltzer tablets
Color about 1/2 cup water with food color. These gel food colors are great for creating vibrant color.
Break the Alka Seltzer tablet into two or three pieces. Place them in a cup or small container.
Fill the glass to about 3/4 with vegetable oil. Pour in colored water up to 1-2 inches above the liquid level in the cup.
You don’t need it to overflow. You can’t make it an explosion experiment unless you really want to. This is why I prefer to do it on a tray. It’s also quick and easy to clean up.
Add the Alka Seltzer tablets to the cup. *At no time should children put the tablet into their mouth.
Why This Science Experiment Works
Water-soluble food coloring prevents the water from mixing with the oil and prevents the oil from changing color. Alka Seltzer reacts to the water and produces carbon dioxide bubbles.
Bubbles stick to the colored water blobs and lift them up to the top. The colored water blobs fall to the bottom when the bubbles pop.
This lava experiment will WOW your children. You may be asked to repeat the experiment like I did.
Winter Lava Lamp Experiment!
This Lava Lamp is super cool. Kids will enjoy exploring oil and colored water with a winter twist.
They were thrilled because it appeared that a blizzard had started inside the glass. This was a fun and exciting science experiment!
Science experiments can help to foster children’s curiosity, spark their imagination and encourage a love of learning! This is a fun way to help kids develop their analytical skills, problem-solving abilities and fine motor skills.
Your kids will love learning about everything from colorful chemical reactions to fascinating physics.
Hands-On Learning
Kids who actively participate in experiments are better able to grasp complex concepts. The tactile nature allows kids to visualize abstract concepts, which is something that traditional teaching methods may struggle to achieve.
Cultivating critical thinking
Children can improve their abilities to observe, analyze, and incorporate new information by engaging in science experiments.
Encourage Creativity
Unpredictability is a common feature of science experiments. Children are encouraged to be creative and experiment with different strategies when they see unexpected results. It creates an atmosphere of innovation where children learn that failing isn’t a failure, but an opportunity to learn.
Building Self-Esteem and Confidence
Confidence grows as kids perform experiments and achieve positive results. This confidence boost will encourage them to take on new challenges with enthusiasm.
Real-Life Applications
Science experiments help to bring theories into reality, showing how they can be applied in the real world.
Fine Motor Skills: Improved
Science experiments are a great way to improve fine motor skills in children. While learning, they will accomplish a variety tasks with their hands.
Collaboration and Bonding
Families, friends and classmates can enjoy a wonderful experience of bonding through science experiments. Kids will create memories and connections whether it is a classroom activity or a family project.
Children can learn a lot from science experiments, and they are also fun!
Fun Science Experiments
This fun science experiment will help you grow a rainbow! It is easy to set up and only requires two cups of drinking water, two paper towels and markers!
This super easy Oobleck recipe only requires two ingredients in your kitchen!
Dinosaur Dig Excavation is a great activity for kids who love oobleck!
The Rainbow Walking Water Science Experiment has been one of the most popular science experiments!
This fun science experiment lets children explore the relationship between clouds and rain.
This chromatography experiment is a great way to introduce kids to the science of chromatography.
